Winter Hands and Nails… By Cliona Sweeney

Ok so winter is well and truly upon us whether we like it or not and the drop in temperature, strong winds and artificial heating systems are detrimental to our skin. Our hands and nails go through so much on a daily basis so we need to protect them from these harsh elements as much as possible. So the first thing I would recommend obviously enough is to wear gloves while outside or alternatively ensure you apply a barrier cream with a built in spf 15 such as boots no 7 protect and perfect intense day hand cream (€13.75).

Your hands are on display so much and is one of the first places to show signs of ageing so prevention is key. One thing that dramatically improves the appearance of our hands is to exfoliate. When you think about it have you ever really given your hands a good scrub? Constant hand washing with anti bacterial soaps strips the moisture leaving a layer of dead skin which acts like a barrier which means no matter how much hand cream we use it does not get through to the deeper layers. I love cocoa browns tough stuff body scrub at the moment (€5.99) or you can even make your own with sugar and almond oil.

Many people suffer from dry, sore and cracked cuticles. The only way to help prevent this is with a cuticle oil. The skin on the cuticles is completely different to that on the hands and it is the only thing that will truly penetrate through to the cuticles and deeper layers of the nail. I particularly love gelish nourish cuticle oil available in all professional nail salons (€5-€6). It is infused with a variety of oils such as almond, safflower, grape seed, kukui nut oil, aloe vera , soluble collagen and vitamin e. The best time to apply this is when you are going to sleep as this is when your body is repairing itself and will not be washed off.

Follow these simple steps and in no time you will have beautifully nourished hands and nails.
